R,I.P. Guillaume Depardieu

THE son of French film star Gerard Depardieu died in hospital yesterday from a bout of pneumonia.

Guillaume Depardieu, also an actor who starred in 20 films, was 37.

A spokesman for Gerard Depardieu said: "He caught a virus, which gave him a very severe pneumonia. Gerard is devastated."

The son of one of France's biggest cinema stars had struggled to escape his father's shadow. He starred in Bertrand Bonello's De la Guerre (Of war) and Versailles - which is now showing in cinemas - and was known for his rebellious streak.

He got in trouble for speeding and drugs, and a conviction for drink-driving landed him in jail earlier this year.

His right leg was amputated in 2003 because of a hospital infection developed during operations to recover from a motorbike accident in 1995.
